Adult guitar lessons at Opus 1

Adult guitar lessons at Opus 1 are built around the songs and styles you actually want to play — acoustic, electric, or classical, across rock, pop, blues, folk, and fingerstyle. Most adults are strumming real songs within the first few weeks. Whether you're a complete beginner or dusting off a guitar that's been in the closet for years, there's no prior experience required and no upper age limit.

Common adult goals: playing a handful of favorite songs, accompanying your own singing, learning fingerstyle, jamming with friends, or finally returning to the guitar after years away.

What you’ll learn

  • Open chords, barre chords, smooth chord changes, and the strumming patterns behind the songs you love
  • Fingerstyle and picking technique for acoustic, folk, and classical playing
  • Reading chord charts and tablature — and standard notation if you want it
  • Rhythm, timing, and how to play and sing at the same time
  • Rock, pop, blues, jazz, folk, and classical repertoire you pick with your teacher

Styles include acoustic, electric, classical, rock, pop, blues, jazz, and folk.

The most social instrument

Guitar is the instrument you bring to gatherings — within months adults are playing songs friends and family recognize, around the campfire or the living room.

Portable and low-barrier

An affordable acoustic and a few chords go a long way. Guitar is forgiving for adult hands and easy to practice anywhere, even 15 minutes at a time.

Play what you love, fast

Because so much popular music is guitar-driven, your teacher can teach the actual songs on your list early — motivation that keeps adults playing for years.

No pressure, no contract

Recitals are always optional for adults. Tuition is month-to-month with no annual contract — start with a trial lesson and continue only if it’s a fit.

Adult guitar lesson FAQs

What adults ask before starting guitar lessons.

Do you teach complete adult beginners on guitar?

Yes — most of our adult guitar students start as beginners or returning players. Lessons begin with comfortable hand position, a few essential chords, and a real song to play, then build technique and theory from there at your pace. Acoustic, electric, and classical are all welcome — your teacher matches the path to the music you want to play.

Am I too old to start guitar lessons?

No — Opus 1 teaches guitar to adults of every age, and many of our adult students start in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond. There is no upper age limit and no prior experience required. Adults often progress faster than they expect because they practice with intention and bring clear goals to each lesson.

How much do adult guitar lessons cost?

Adult guitar lessons use the same monthly membership tuition as all private lessons — $265 to $595 per month for one weekly lesson, depending on lesson length and teacher level (Standard, Senior, or Master). Adult lessons run 45 or 60 minutes, so an adult trial lesson is $35 for 45 minutes or $45 for 60 minutes. Tuition is a flat amount each month, including months with five lessons, and there is no annual contract.

Can I schedule guitar lessons around a full-time job?

Yes. Opus 1 operates seven days a week year-round, with weekday evening and weekend availability that works well for adults balancing work and family. You hold one consistent weekly time slot, and our full-time front-desk staff helps you find a teacher and a time that fits your schedule.

Where can I take adult guitar lessons near me?

Opus 1 teaches adult guitar lessons in person at two campuses — Palo Alto (3401 El Camino Real) and Mountain View (1350 Grant Road). Both are convenient across the mid-Peninsula and South Bay, with on-site parking and evening and weekend availability. Pick the campus closest to you to book an adult trial lesson.
