Children's music class FAQs
Children can begin at Opus 1 as early as age 3 in our Music for Young Children group keyboard classes, which build rhythm, pitch, singing, and listening skills in a playful group setting. Private lessons typically begin at age 5 for piano and voice and age 6 for violin, cello, and guitar — once a child can focus for a full lesson and work one-on-one with a teacher.
Yes. Our Music for Young Children program is designed for ages 3 to 6, with separate groupings for ages 3–4 and 5–6 so the pace and material fit each stage. Classes use the keyboard as a hands-on, visual way to learn rhythm, singing, note reading, and ear training — the foundation that makes later private lessons successful.
For most young children the piano or keyboard is the ideal starting point — it makes notes and rhythm visual and builds a foundation that transfers to every other instrument. That's why our early-childhood classes are keyboard-based. Voice is also a natural fit. Children who start young often move into private piano, violin, cello, guitar, ukulele, or voice lessons when they're ready.
Group classes — including Music for Young Children — are social, playful, and ideal for young beginners building fundamentals alongside peers. Private lessons give one-on-one attention tailored to a single student's pace and goals. Many families start young children in group classes and then add or move to private lessons around age 5 or 6.
Private lessons use monthly membership tuition starting around $265 per month, and a private trial lesson for a child under 8 is just $25 for 30 minutes. Group classes and the Music for Young Children program have their own session-based tuition — see the program pages for current pricing. There is no annual contract.
Opus 1 teaches children's music classes at three campuses — two in Mountain View (Grant Road and Moffett Boulevard) and one in Palo Alto on El Camino Real — serving families across Mountain View, Palo Alto, Los Altos, Sunnyvale, Cupertino, Menlo Park, and Atherton.
